What are life transitions?

If you’ve gone off to college, became a parent, moved to another state, started a new job, got married, and so on, you’ve experienced a life transition. Life transitions are not always negative experiences; sometimes, they are difficult and even the positive transitions can cause unnecessary stress in our lives.

Adjusting to change can be difficult. Over the course of a lifetime, a person can expect to experience a significant amount of change. Some of these changes, such as marriages, births, and new jobs, are generally positive, although they may be accompanied by their own unique stressors. Other major life transitions, such as moving, retirement, or entering the “empty nest” phase of life may cause a significant amount of stress.

There are several treatment approaches to assist with adjusting to change. Talking about it will be the first step in helping you. Recognizing patterns in your life and learning how to cope with change will help you prepare for more in the future. If you’re experiencing anxiety, depression, or trauma from a life transition, let’s talk.

More examples of life transitions:

  • Divorce / Infidelity
  • Pregnancy
  • Empty Nest Syndrome
  • Health changes
  • Loss and death

How will counseling help me?

Change is part of life, but you don’t have to go through it alone.

If you find yourself experiencing difficulty coping with life transitions, you may find it helpful to speak to a therapist in order to become better able to adjust to changes you cannot control. Trauma from the past can also cause stress and anxiety during certain life transitions.

It’s important to deal with your fear of loss and the unknown, it will help you to live a more balanced life. Therapy will help you with coping with change, decreasing your stress levels, and dealing with the unknown. Together, we will work on overcoming the challenges you’re facing and empower you to feel confident in your next steps.
